We recommend training your dog and adjusting them for a harness as well as a collar. So that your walk times can be easier and more peaceful in case you don’t have a harness or collar. However, for regular usage prioritize a harness as it is more beneficial for a dog in many ways.
Is It Better To Use a Dog Harness?
So is it better to use a harness or a collar? A harness covers your dog’s chest, and shoulders and applies even pressure to the body. Hence, offering more control and security. A dog harness is also more comfortable than a collar as the pressure isn’t being directly applied to your fluffy friend’s neck.
Cons Of A Dog Collar
Here are some cons of using a collar for your dog.
- Applies stress on the neck & can lead to an injury.
- Slipping out of a collar is fairly easy for a dog which can cause road accidents or run away in someone else’s yard.
- Dog collars offer less control.
- A collar can be painful or uncomfortable for your pooch.
Cons Of A Dog Harness
The main disadvantage of using a dog harness instead of a collar is that some dogs aren’t used to wearing one and can be difficult to get them acclimated to a harness and be comfortable. You just need to get your dog comfortable in a harness.
The Benefits Of Using A Dog Harness
Following are some major advantages of a harness.
- Applies pressure evenly on a dog’s body.
- A harness offers more control.
- Dog harnesses provide more safety.
- If your dog is used to it, harnesses are more comfortable and less painful.
How To Measure A Dog For A Harness?
A harness would be your best tool to have the most possible control on your dog and would really make the walk times more efficient.
The process of measuring a dog is almost the same for every breed. So no matter if you have a labrador or an Australian shepherd, the procedure will be more or less the same.
Measure The Chest First
Most dog harnesses only require the measurement of the chest. Only a few of them require the measurement of the neck. So start by wrapping the measuring tape around the broadest part of the chest, directly behind the front legs, and connecting the ends on the back. Make sure that it’s not too tight or too loose. Now simply write down the measurements on paper.
In most cases, this is all you need to do but just in case, you should measure the neck as well if the harness you want requires it. This is also pretty simple.
Note: Some pet stores might also require your dog’s body weight along with the chest and neck measurements. So write that down as well.
How To Put On A Dog Harness
Once you’ve received this beautiful harness or bought it from the pet store, it is time to properly put it on your dog and adjust it.
Before anything else, if your dog isn’t used to wearing a harness, we highly recommend making him comfortable around it first. Otherwise, it might get really challenging to put on a harness.
So now you need to properly put on the harness. Here’s how to do so:
1. Command your dog to sit and stay in a position.
2. Put the harness on the ground.
3. Stand behind your dog and slide the paws from the two loops.
4. Once the paws are in, now slide the harness over your dog’s head, towards the back.
5. Use the clips and buckle the harness.
6. Lastly attach the leash to the ring of the harness.
Note: If the harness is too tight or too loose, you need to adjust it. We recommend adjusting it so that you can slip two fingers between any of the straps. Try to pull it over the head and make sure that it doesn’t slip out.
A dog harness is always recommended over a regular collar as it provides more control, is more comfortable, and is safer. Measuring a dog for a harness is also pretty easy as you already read above. Just need a few measurements and that’s all there is to it.
